The topping out ceremony marks a milestone in the Holly Springs facility’s development.
August 19, 2026
By: Patrick Lavery
Editor’s Take: This construction underscores Genentech’s confidence in the regional workforce and long-term potential.
Genentech on Aug. 18 raised the final beam of its new Holly Springs, NC manufacturing facility, marking structural framework completion. Holly Springs, and the wider Raleigh–Durham region, has been growing as a biopharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation hub.
The topping out ceremony was a construction milestone for Genentech, which is a member of the Roche Group. The company says it reflects on-time progress for its approximate $2 billion investment.
When completed, the manufacturing facility will be Genentech’s first on the East Coast of the United States. Initial announcement of this project came in May 2025, with groundbreaking in August of 2025 and expansion in January 2026.
More broadly, Roche and Genentech are committing $50 billion to R&D and manufacturing infrastructure in the U.S. Currently, this footprint encompasses 13 manufacturing sites, 15 R&D sites, and 25,000 employees in 24 overall locations in eight states.
The Holly Springs facility should eventually support over 2000 jobs: more than 500 high-wage manufacturing positions, and 1500 construction openings.
The facility intends to produce next-generation treatments for metabolic conditions like obesity. Advanced biomanufacturing, automation, robotics, and up-to-date digital manufacturing technologies will support production efficiency, sustainability, and strengthen the U.S. supply chain.
Regarding Genentech’s investment on the technology side, the facility will feature an advanced digital twin. This AI-powered, data-driven model simulates operations and tests scenarios prior to real-world implementation.
To support its anticipated new workforce, Genentech will partner with academic institutions local to the Raleigh–Durham area. This will prepare talent for manufacturing careers in such areas as AI, robotics, automation, and advanced biomanufacturing.
Genentech says the construction milestone reflects its confidence in Holly Springs’ workforce, community, and long-term potential.
